Hurricane Helene Recovery Project #1

$725.00

As year 2024 was winding down, we were pondering what handle material we would use on the final release of the Twenty 24 Axe. With the travesty of Hurricane Helene came our decision. The final run of the limited edition axe will be issued in remembrance of September 27, 2024- the day that Helene ravaged five states, with her full fury aimed at the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina.

Winkler Knives suffered a considerable financial loss but we consider ourselves blessed. Hundreds are dead. An untold number of people are still unaccounted for. Thousands upon thousands are displaced. Homes and communities are destroyed. Businesses obliterated. Winkler Knives is blessed to be intact and to have the opportunity to carry on. We have been seriously inconvenienced but not devastated. We count our blessings.

Our first project to aid in the recovery from our losses is the Final Edition of the Twenty 24 Axe. Not only will the sale of the axe help our Company, we have pledged to donate 25% of the sales to The Mitchell County Development Foundation. Mitchell County-home to the townships of Spruce Pine, NC and Bakersville, NC and communities such as Buladean, Relief, Tipton Hill, Red Hill, Poplar and others- was decimated by Helene. Helene brought tornados, 140 mph winds and extensive flooding. At least 120 homes were totally destroyed and over 1100 seriously damaged. As of now, there are 8 known storm-related deaths in the County. Much of the downtown Spruce Pine area was totally destroyed. Railroad tracks and many roads are essentially gone.

This Final Edition Twenty 24 Axe features Appalachian Black Walnut handle scales. The handle material was slabbed from a 100+ year old Black Walnut reclaimed from the waters of the French Broad River after Hurricane Florence in 2018. The slabs were kiln dried and have been reserved for only very special projects since being gifted to Winkler Knives. The wood is much deeper in color than most walnut, with very tight grain structure. In addition to the unique handles, the axes bear two special touch marks. Preceding the traditional Twenty 24 mark are 9.27., representing the date Helene devastated North Carolina Mountain Communities. On the other side of the tang are the words, "God Bless Appalachia".
